WEDU First School Visit – June 3rd 2010

Six members of 3GNY spoke to two classes at Satellite Academy, a public high school on the Lower East Side on Thursday, June 3, 2010.

“WEDU” was launched on January 27, 2010, on the 65th anniversary of liberation of Auschwitz, at an event attended by 300 people.  “WEDU” was developed with guidance from Facing History and Ourselves, along with other professional educators.

The first group of 3GNY volunteers gathered together at the offices of Facing History and Ourselves in March and April 2010, to share family stories, work with educators and learn how to incorporate multimedia.

Volunteers faced two hurdles: learning their grandparents’ history thoroughly enough to communicate it to others; and finding the voice with which to convey a story not their own, to students with little knowledge of the Holocaust.

As we forge a new way of educating future generations about the Holocaust, the weeks spent learning our family histories were as compelling and powerful as sharing them with the students.
